Course name:
Inorganic Pollutants

Academic year:

2023/2024.

Attendance requirements:

102S2

ECTS:

11

Study level:

basic academic studies

Study program:

Environmental Chemistry: 3. year, summer semester, elective (E12S2) course

Teacher:

Konstantin B. Ilijeviæ, Ph.D.
assistant professor, Faculty of Chemistry, Studentski trg 12-16, Beograd

Assistants:

Hours of instruction:

Weekly: three hours of lectures + five hours of labwork (3+0+5)

Goals:

The main goal of the course Inorganic Pollutants is to help undergraduate students acquire basic knowledge of the properties and behavior of inorganic pollutants which can be found in the atmosphere, water and soil. Furthermore, students learn how pollutants enter the atmosphere, water and soil and about their behavior. Students are also introduced to the basic toxicological properties of these pollutants and the methods for their detection and quantification.

Outcome:

Knowledge of inorganic pollutants enables the student to assess the quality of all media in the environment and environmental burdens and hazards, which is important for working in laboratories in industry, inspections services and institutes. This course provides the student with solid background knowledge which he can later broaden and increase in order to gain knowledge necessary for the assessment and study of the processes in the environment. In the laboratory classes organized within this course students will become familiar with a large number of relevant instrumental techniques used for sample preparation and analysis of inorganic pollutants (microwave digestion, AAS, ICP-OES, WD-XRF), and gain valuable experience of doing practical work using analytical instruments and processing measurement data.

Teaching methods:

Lectures and experimental exercises.

Extracurricular activities:

Collecting literature, preparing for the classes, preparing for progress tests and the exam.
