Goals:

The goal of the course Modern Instrumental Methods in Analytical Chemistry is to introduce students, who have already successfully completed the courses in classical and instrumental analytical chemistry, to highly sensitive and selective instrumental methods which have wide and diverse applications in the analyses of biological materials, industrial and environmental samples. Within this course, students should acquire theoretical and practical knowledge of modern electrochemical, optical and nonspectroscopic methods of instrumental analysis. In addition to this, students should gain the theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of electrochemical bio-nanosensors and kinetic and catalytic methods of analysis. Within this course, students will learn about safety and quality control of laboratories, handling samples, the importance of reference materials, the calibration of an analytical system and the control of laboratory instruments.

Outcome:

After this course, the student will be able to independently choose and apply each of the abovementioned instrumental methods to real samples and to modify them if necessary.

Lectures and experimental exercises (group and individual).

Extracurricular activities:

Students are obliged to finish the graphs and do each group and individual exercise in case they have not finished them in laboratory classes.

Labwork:

Syllabus:

1. Conductometry - determination of binding constants in complexes by conductometric titrations

2 and 3. Potentiometry - independent exercises - potentiometric titrations of complex matrices - indirect determination of milk and dairy products quality. Determination of humic acid content in soil

4, 5, 6. Polarography and striping analysis - metal content in samples of milk and other foods by polarographic analysis. Optimization method

7, 8, 9. Voltammetry - cyclic voltammetry. Selection of electrodes for work. Voltammetry of biologically important compounds and pollutants

10. and 11. Optical methods - quality testing of previously tested food samples. Sample preparation, analysis and comparison with previous results

12, 13, 14 and 15. Analysis of complex samples by instrumental techniques - Preparation, analysis, processing of results and their validation.
