Goals:

In undergraduate courses students learn about spectroscopic methods. Hence, the main aim of this course it is to teach students to use spectroscopic methods to characterize coordination compounds.

Outcome:

After this course students should be able to use various spectroscopic methods to characterize coordination compounds.

  • Characterization of complex compounds by infrared and Raman spectroscopy.
  • Electronic absorption spectroscopy (UV/Vis). Metal-metal transfers. Splitting of orbitals in ligand field. Jahn-Teller effect.
  • M.O. theory, spectrochemical series.
  • Optical rotatory disperzion and its application in assignment of absolute configuration.
  • Circular dichroism and its application in assignment of absolute configuration.
  • Characterization of complex compounds by NMR spectroscopy.
  • Mass spectroscopy. Ionization methods.
  • Electron spin resonance spectroscopy.
  • Solving problems by combining spectroscopic methods.
