Course name:
School Experiments in Chemistry 1

Academic year:

2023/2024.

Attendance requirements:

102A2 + 201A2 + 202A2

ECTS:

8

Study level:

integrated basic and graduate academic studies

Study program:

Chemical Education: 4. year, winter semester, compulsory course

Teacher:

Filip J. Biheloviæ, Ph.D.
associate professor, Faculty of Chemistry, Studentski trg 12-16, Beograd

Assistant:

Lidija R. Raleviæ
assistant, Faculty of Chemistry, Studentski trg 12-16, Beograd

Hours of instruction:

Weekly: two hours of lectures + six hours of labwork (2+0+6)

Goals:

Chemistry teaching cannot be of good quality if it lacks experimental demonstrations and laboratory exercises. Within this course, students will see about 150 experiments which can be used in teaching chemistry in the first and second grade of grammar schools – where the focus is primarily on general and inorganic chemistry. Most of the experiments performed within this course are demonstrations, but many of them can be modified into individual or group experiments.

Outcome:

The student acquires the knowledge which enables him to correctly select, perform and use chemical experiments suitable for chemistry teaching in primary and secondary education.

Teaching methods:

Lectures and experimental exercises.

Extracurricular activities:

Coursebooks:

  1. Chemical Demonstrations: A Handbook for Teachers of Chemistry, Vol. 1-5, Bassam Shakhashiri
  2. Classic Chemistry Demonstrations, Ted Lister, Royal Society of Chemistry, 1995.
  3. Chemical Curiosities, H. W. Roesky, K. Mӧckel, 1996.
