Research Area

Our research comprises synthetic and theoretical organic chemistry.

In the first, we aim to develop new and efficient methods for the synthesis of various heterocycles and their precursors, push-pull alkenes and dienes, by employing standard solution state reactions and less common solid-state reactions conducted on the surface of silica gel. Target compounds can be interesting in the fields of chemistry, biology, medicine and materials.

Our theoretical work is focused on exploration of ground and excited state properties of mono- and polycyclic compounds and possibility of their prediction and tuning. For example, it is known that (4n+2) π-electronic systems become antiaromatic and very reactive in their first triplet and singlet excited states, whereas 4n π-electronic systems become aromatic (Baird's rule). The influence of various factors on these properties, such as introduction of substituents, replacement of one or more CH units by the isoelectronic heteroatomic one(s), or different topologies of polycyclic systems is our current topic of research. The results can be interesting in the fields of photochemistry and photophysics, and material chemistry.
