Goals:

Students will acquire essential knowledge of the nomenclature of organic and inorganic compounds. The course covers various types of the nomenclature of organic compounds, the nomenclature of acyclic, carbocyclic and heterocyclic compounds, the nomenclature of a large number of functional groups, the nomenclature of natural products and polymers. Furthermore, students will acquire knowledge of the nomenclature of organometallic and coordination compounds.

Outcome:

The acquired knowledge will be relevant for studying synthetic organic and inorganic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, environmental chemistry, for working in chemical education and state administration, etc.

Syllabus:

  1. Fundamentals of the systematic nomenclature in organic chemistry. Basic structures of molecular skeleton (hydrocarbons, heterochains, carbomonocyles, the selection of the principal chain, prefixes of the corresponding substituents).
  2. Polycyclic hydrocarbons (condensed hydrocarbons, bridged hydrocarbons, spiro compounds).
  3. Heterocyclic compounds (mono- and polycyclic).
  4. Radicals, cations, anions, zwitterions, radical ions.
  5. Priority order of functional groups. Carboxylic acids and related acids and corresponding salts. Sulfonic acids and related acids and corresponding salts.
  6. Oxoacids of carbon, selenium, tellurium, nitrogen, phosphorus, arsenic, antimony, bismuth, silicon, boron.
  7. Acid derivatives – anhydrides, esters, lactones, acyl halides.
  8. Nitrogen derivatives of acids – amides, lactams, imides, amidines, hydrazides, nitriles.
  9. Aldehydes and ketones, their derivatives, alcohols and phenols, hydroperoxides.
  10. Amines, imines, other functional groups which contain nitrogen, phosphorus, arsenic, antimony and bismuth.
  11. Other functional groups which contain boron, silicon, germanium, tin, lead, oxygen, sulfur, selenium, tellurium and halogens.
  12. Types of nomenclature (substitutive, radicofunctional, additive, subtractive, conjunctive, replacement nomenclature, the nomenclature of assemblies of identical units).
  13. Nomenclature of natural products. Nomenclature of polymers. Software for nomenclature. Internet addresses.
  14. Nomenclature of organometallic compounds.
  15. Nomenclature of coordination compounds.
