Hours of instruction:

Weekly: four hours of lectures + four hours of labwork (4+0+4)

Goals:

The aim of this course is to provide students with an insight into current topics in inorganic chemistry. It introduces a variety of chemical elements (primarily transition elements) and their compounds. In addition, the course examines biological systems and the application of inorganic compounds in various fields of science and technology.

Outcome:

Upon completing this course, students will have a wider knowledge of inorganic chemistry. They will be able to use the literature in order to find and use information on some topics from the field of inorganic chemistry.

Teaching methods:

Lectures, exercises, term papers.

Extracurricular activities:

Coursebooks:

Main coursebooks:

  • K. Mackay, R. Mackay, W. Henderson: Introduction to Modern Inorganic Chemistry, N. Thornes, 2002.

Supplementary coursebooks:

  • The latest papers from international scientific journals.

Additional material:

  Course activities and grading method

Lectures:

0 points (4 hours a week)

Syllabus:

General properties of elements (s, p, d, f) in correlation with the PTE. The d-block elements of the Periodic Table of Elements (PTE) - general properties, their importance and role in science, technology and life. The 3d elements and their compounds - specific aspects. The 4d and 5d elements and their compounds - specific aspects. The f elements - specific aspects and typical compounds. Carbonyl compounds of the d and f elements. Organometallic compounds of lanthanides and actinides and their role in catalysis. Cluster compounds of the p- and d-block elements. Selected inorganic materials. Solid state; aqueous and non-aqueous solutions. Instrumental methods for determining structure in solid state. Inorganic substances as biomaterials, their importance and role in environmental industry.

Labwork:

15 points (4 hours a week)

Syllabus:

During laboratory classes (which are organized on the individual level) each student will perform a complete synthesis and characterization of an inorganic compound. Within the synthesis, students will try different synthetic routes (e. g. the reaction of transmetallation, template or direct synthesis). Depending on the nature of the given inorganic substance, different methods for the characterization of compounds will be used.

Semester papers:

15 points

Oral exam:

70 points
