Ecohydrology and ecohydrological biotechnologies as environmentally friendly remediation approaches for contaminated ecosystems

Magdalena Urbaniak is an Associate professor at University of Lodz and University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague. Her scientific interest, with the exception of the research addressed by her Master's thesis, is centred on the use of biotechnology to reduce pollution of the environment, with a particular emphasis on priority hazardous substances in the field of water policy, which include, among others, PCDDs/PCDFs and PCBs. She began her scientific career investigating the spatial distribution of the aforementioned toxic compounds in 9 reservoirs located in Central Poland, culminating in the doctoral dissertation. The next outcomes of her research helped to identify the migration paths of priority hazardous substances in river basins and the possibility of reducing their concentrations in the environment. From 2008 to 2012, she participated to an aid project of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Ethiopia. Major achievements were a series of publications on the identification of risks arising from the presence of PCDDs/PCDFs and dl-PCBs in the environment and the implementation of advanced but low-cost solutions to improve the quality of the ecosystem and people's lives. The obtained knowledge and experience became the basis for further challenges aimed at developing efficient and environmentally-friendly methods for the elimination of xenobiotics based on the use of biotechnology and taking into account range of biological, chemical and physical parameters. On the whole she managed integrating technical solutions and biological processes, including inter alia bio- and phytoremediation processes.The performed studies fit into the system of integrated approach to the protection and rehabilitation of water and land ecosystems, and contribute to the implementation of environmental directives of the European Commission.

Her publication record includes (co-)authorship of more than 60 publications, incl. 38 published in peer-reviewed journals of international scope (H-index=11). She is also editor of two books and author of several book chapters. Her scientific excellence is reflected by a high number oral and poster presentations at international conferences, including those dedicated to bioremediation and phytoremediation (e.g. IBC, ISEB). Her activity in the field of organic contaminants was spotted by international scientific bodies what is reflected in her invitation to be Scientific Committee Member of conferences of global (eg. Dioxins 2018) and international relevance (eg.ICEEM09 and International Symposium in Ethiopia 2016). She has also considerable experience in coordination and management of interdisciplinary scientific projects at national and international level.
