Dr. Begoña Jiménez

Senior scientist at the Institute of Organic Chemistry, Madrid, Spain

Lecture:
Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in the environment: case studies

Prof. Jiménez completed her Ph.D. in Environmental Chemistry, University Complutense of Madrid, Spain in 1994.

Dr. Jiménez has an extensive research experience on issues related on the analytical and environmental chemistry of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems with the ultimate goal of understanding their fate and behavior in the global environment. Such approaches are based on field work studies and the development and application of analytical methodologies to carry out the determination of legacy and emerging POPs at trace levels in a variety of environmental matrices. All the analytical methods for the detection of legacy and emerging POPs are updated and validated in accordance with the progress of the instrumentation available, to allow reliable, faster and less expensive testing protocols. Recently, her research field has expanded to include emerging contaminants of concern such as DP and poly/perfluorinated compounds in complex environmental matrices including target and screening analysis.

Dr. Jiménez plays an important role, both at national and international scale, on issues related to the detection, fate of behavior of legacy and emerging POPs. She has participated in 42 projects and 21 contracts at both national and international level, being project leader of 26 of them. She has been advisor in international commissions concerning POPs and currently leads the Spanish Monitoring Program, funded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, for assessing levels and temporal trends of POPs (PCBs, OCPs, PCDD/Fs, PBDEs and PFOS) and emerging contaminants in air and water from urban and remote areas in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the measures taken under the Stockholm Convention.

Dr. Jiménez has authored more than 150 publications, among them 100 in SCI top quartile journals including "Nature GeoSciences", "Environmental Science & Technology", "Environment International", "Environmental Pollution", "Journal of Chromatography A", etc. She has an H factor of 25 with more than 1500 citations.

Dr. Jiménez and her research team has sufficient experience in sampling designs, field work and the use of different chromatographic separation techniques for both gas and liquid chromatography coupled to different mass spectrometry detection systems (ITD, qMS, MS/MS, HRMS and TOF) in order to identify and quantify legacy and emerging POPs. She has contributed to the scientific knowledge on the presence and potential effects of POPs in wildlife species from protected or hot-spot areas such as the Antarctic, Doñana National Park or the Mediterranean Sea using nondestructive approaches.
